The Christmas List (A Contest)
-Jo March, in Louisa Alcott's Little Women
There's a crazy blogger out there trying to knit 60 Christmas gifts. That makes my list more do-able (right?), and inspires me to catalog it.
- Trekking socks - done
- a baby sweater - done
- Merino Lace socks - done
- (so far so good, eh?)
- 2 pairs of Log Cabin Socks - 75% done pair 1, 0% done pair 2
- one cabled hat - done
- one scarf - 0% done
- one Shedir - 50% done
- Regia socks - 0% done
- (gosh, maybe I need to cast on for some more presents . . .)
So, what does your Christmas list look like? Psst . . . it's a contest. Comment here with your list, or post to your blog and link to the list. Entries will be accepted until 15 November 2007. Midnight PST.

It's always worse to see it written down, but here goes:
1 pair Log Cabin Socks - one sock done, second sock barely begun
1 Fair Isle hat - first FI project, 0% complete
2 Grownup bonnets - one mostly completed, one has scarf done
1 striped hat - not begun
Obi Scarf (Veronik Avery) - not begun.
Argh.
I gave up Christmas knitting last year. I always had great hopes, and I let myself down as an annual tradition. So, I will de-lurk to watch the rest of you being far more productive than I! LOL
I, um, didn't commit to any Christmas knitting this year. I do have a scarf OTN for Number Guy, but it isn't really for Christmas.
Let's see...
3 striped hats (all the same, but 2 are for 3 month olds and 1 for a 2 year old) - 0% done
Chevron scarf - will probably gift early - 75% done
3 Noro 2 color striped scarves - 2 done, 1 50% done
Bainbridge scarf - 0% done
Gnome - 75% done
STR Grinchy socks for myself (want to wear during December) - 0% done
Felted Pear - 0% done
I think that covers it, I am sure I will add to the list if I get most of this done.
I'm with the (mostly) giving up on Christmas knitting crowd. I loved the suggestion in Handknit Holidays to just knit for one person each holiday and make something really nice for them and switch it out each year.
But for the sake of playing along:
1 cashmere knit/crochet baby blanket 97% done (it's technically a baby gift, but the baby's due Christmas week)
1 baby shrug from Debbie Bliss Simply Baby - 0% done (same baby as above)
1 cotton everyday baby blanket, from Debbi Macomber's knit along with book - 0% done (same baby, this is only if I'm feeling really ambitious)
Some manly man socks - 0 % done
Some Fetching handwarmers 0% done
I've got to hurry up and finish that blanket.
Eleven felted Entrelac bags - 4 felted, ready for lining - one knit to be felted, one started and crap!5 more to be knit
gauntlets for my oldest niece - not started
Forest Canopy in handspun for my sister - only two more pattern repeats to go
Kiri for me - in handspun luxury fibers yummmmmy 10 repeats out of 20 done (I wish this meant I was halfway there)
Hat for D - using sock yarn doubled - almost done
socks for D, 3x1 rib plain grey trekking - boring - the toe of one is about 3" long
My boss is hinting she wants something - have no idea what that will be.
Whew! I hate to see it all down in writing like that.
No, this is an easy contest to enter! Here's my list:
- Dashing warmers 2/3rds done
- Shedir - barely started
- Drop-stitch scarf - 1/3 done
- Hand warmers - not started.
Great progress on your list!
chevron scarf for niece 50% done
several prs. of fingerless gloves for coworkers 1 pr. started.
pr. of socks for oldest son ( size 13 feet) not started
and no doubt some other things!
This is year I will be knitting no gifts! That's right. None! Wheeeeee!!!!!
My first year as a knitter was marred by Christmas deadlines - I absolutely HAD to make a gift for everyone. I made it, but after that I decided to make gifts in my own time, without deadlines, and give throughout the year just because I could... and it's been so much better for me! Hope your list doesn't stress you out, and that you're better able to hang onto the joy of knitting, even under deadline :)
My current list (not finalized):
1. 2 hats - neither started
2. 3 scarves - 1 at 95%, 1 at about 60% and one not started
3. 2 pairs mittens - not started
4. some baby knits - not started and not decided exactly what
5. ???
Hmmm, I'm starting to see a problem here between people to knit for, time left till Christmas to knit and my speed of knitting.....
I'm trying to take it easy this year, but here's the current plan:
sweater for sister - done (one I made for me that is too warm for texas)
socks for mom - done
purse for SIL - done
purse for other SIL - started
sweater for hubbo - started
socks for MIL - not started
slippers for hubbo's granddad - started
slippers for dad - not started
scarves for my co-teachers - not started
bottle cozie for dad - done
There are ornaments too, as always, and some sewing projects, and I'm sure I'll add to this list. I always do.
I'm probably NOT knitting for Christmas this year -- though I MIGHT knit my Mother-in-law a pair of gloves if the right yarn comes along.
This year, it's just a pair of socks for my sister and a hat for a friend. Both were specifically asked for, and I'm happy to comply. But I don't have the energy to knit unasked-for things for everyone in my family (like I used to).
I put up a post about your contest on my knitting contest blog: http://wiknit.blogspot.com
My list is short.
1. Finish my son's sweater.
2. Squatty sidekick purse for my sister.
But I'm thinking of adding a couple of quick projects for the kids' teachers. Maybe a cute ornament if I can find something I like
Hiya! My Christmas knitting list is on the sidebar of my blog. You'll see how much progress I've not made on my Christmas knitting. Stay tuned to my blog as I bemoan my idiocy of wanting to knit everyone a Christmas present. :)
Oh, and also, the list is not quite complete. I will be adding more to it shortly, of course....
I've finished a scarf for my mother and that's it for gifts! The rest are for me so my deadline is easier - whenever, although I'm finishing a sweater that I hope to have done by Thanksgiving which is my birthday!
I haven't committed to any Christmas knitting. I'll probably knit a couple of dishcloths to wrap up with some food for an anonymous gift exchange, and I might knit some socks for my mom if I have time, but I am not willing to give myself deadlines which might get in the way of studying or baking.
Mine keeps changing depending on what I finish and what I may have time for if I get it all done.
5 pair socks including 2 for men with large feet.
2 scarves, maybe 3
anywhere from 0 - 3 pair gloves and/or mittens
anywhere from 0 - 3 hats
1 crocheted doll outfit
this is rough... i don't want to confess the number of items i have in my head as knitting to be done by Christmas. but! it needs to be said.
40 ornaments/decorations (for annual local nursing home project)
2.5 pairs of mittens (for Soaring Eagles Project; not technically Christmas, but due prior)
1 pair of slippers (Soaring Eagles Project)
1 pair of gloves (for mom)
1 gift bag (for mom)
4 fortune cookies (for friends)
4 coasters (for grandma)
1 dishcloth (for grandma)
...and that's just what i can think of off the top of my head. needless to say, none of it is started yet. actually, it is a bit overwhelming, but i persevered last year and i can do it again! (i hope) : )
oh, and i came over here from wiknit.
I still have to knit for Christmas: 1 pair of socks for hubby, and one for me. Followed by a sweater for my youngest son...plus a matching pair of socks. The rest has to wait until 2008
Hmm. Christmas List...
1. repair little brother's beanie
2. knit reindeer fairisle hat for father
3. complete socks for friend
and that's it. I'm not knitting for anyone else. They're all screwed this year. :P
My plan is to knit exactly what I want to and THEN decide if any of it should be gifts. I have trouble actually planning what to give people - I just spread out all the loot and say "hmmm -maybe Mom would like these mittens" etc.
I had to come and see this to check out what every one else has to say. I just have three knitting projects for the holiday - one Forest Canopy Shawl, totally done, some knit play food, just done, one Irish Hiking Scarf, three inches from half way, and one Lace Scarf, exactly half way. Not too bad. But then there are the fourteen crochet cupcakes for a swap, eighteen yarn ornaments for another swap, four tied fleece blankets (got to get the kids to help there) and two quilts. I always try not to stress myself out, but it never seems to work.
A almost forgot the IOU to my husband for a pair of socks for his birthday.
1. Felted slippers for a friend - finished.
2. Shawl for a friend - finished
3. Shawl for my aunt - bought the yarn yesterday
4. 2 sets of dishtowels and matching dishcloths for two friends - finished
5. Dishcloths - work friend - I have a bunch that I've done and keep putting away so I'll dig through and see what I've got so I guess her gift is ready too.
Thanks for the fun contest. It's always so nice seeing what others are doing and have done.
here goes . . .
1 Shedir - Done
1 Koolhaas - 0% done
1 pair Uptown boot socks - %20 done with first sock
1 Ene - 50% done
I think I can, I think I can . . .
I'm actually doing more Christmas knitting than usual this year, but still have a pretty light list, as I only give gifts to about 5 people every year.
1. Sweater for my sister, 1/3 done.
2. Felted clogs for my mom, not started.
I should really get on those.
I'm actually done with all my gift knitting. I took it all to the post office and had it weighed for correct postage and it's just waiting for the first week of december to be posted.
Looks like you're really putting a dent in your list.
Oh My! I'll have to face the truth:
-I'm planning on making 20 Calorimetries for friends and family (I'm on #7)
-I have 13 family members that I'm planning on knitting something for them. Mostly felted clogs, a doctor's bag, some fake isle hats (I'm on my 3rd Felted clog)
-There are 4 babies that I woudl like to give knitted booties or something.
- I have 2 guy friends that can't wear calorimetries, so I hope I can knit them a hat.
WOW! I don't think I'm getting them all done, but I'll try!
Hello! I always lurk around your blog - thanks for inspiring me to post to my own...not because of the contest - although contests are cool, just because I am inspired by your list. Mine is here: http://bysarah.typepad.com/by_sarah/2007/11/my-christmas-kn.html
-2 washcloths - Done!
-Soap holder scrubby thing - Done!
-Fingerless Gloves - Just started the first one
-Basketweave scarf - Not started
-5 doggy bandanas - Got on finished and haven't started the rest
-3 Purses - Done!
This is revised... I did have a few other things on there, but there's no way I could have completed it all!
Socks for my mom
Socks for my husband
Sweater for my older daughter (and maybe one for the younger if I finish quickly)
Scarf for my sister
I haven't started a thing, though I have yarn and patterns chosen for all but the scarf.
Well, so far mine looks like this:
-socks for my Mom in Knit Picks Felici, Firefighter colorway- done
-socks for my 2 sisters
-beanies for my 2 sons,3 nephews & baby brother
-tie for my Dad
-fingerless gloves for eldest son
-"wand" holder for youngest son
-afghan for eldest son
-scarf for both girls
-something cute for new 3 year old neice
-wash cloth sets for sisters, friends, & Mom
I think that is it! LOL
I'm a new knitter. Actually will be my first Christmas as a knitter, so I'm not going crazy with a list.
So far my knitted plans include:
1 Prayer shawl that I made for my Grandmom...Done
1 toddler scarf made from Valley Yarns in a simple rib pattern for my neice
2 head bands made from sock yarn for my sister in law
That's about it
I didn't even have a list until this weekend when I decided it would be nice to knit my son's girlfriend a pair of fingerless mitts in her favorite color--orange. If I have enough yarn, I might make a hat to go with it.
Mine is embarrassing. Two dishcloths (maybe three) and two vests for my little nephews. Sadly, my arthritis is acting up and since knitting is the #1 worst thing for it, I'm not sure even those will get done! I've got 1" of a dishcloth and almost an entire back of a vest done. It's going to be a long slog of knitting in fits and starts!
I don't usually do Christmas knitting - too much pressure. (Although last year I did some last-minute things. It was like the knitting Olympics again.) If I get inspired, I might make some dishcloths - the garterlac dishcloth pattern makes a really good dishcloth, and they're fun and quick. Someday I'll probably make a spate of scarves.
I don't do many knitted gifts because most people I know don't/won't appreciate it or don't/won't use it. Call me practical or pessimistic. There are a few items I plan on knitting, though not necessarily as Christmas gifts.
1. Fetching mitts for my college roommate - done
2. Saartje's Bootees for a coworker's daughter (due in Jan.)
For me: I have already knit a hat/scarf from the Knit1 mag for daughters best friend...she is like my second daughter.
hat for daughters boyfriend.
Afghan for mom.
socks for MIL. (or a lace type scarf)
xmas ball covers with sock yarn
i found this link through another blogger's post...it's always great to find cool new blogs through contests!
I think if I had to make this list 4 months ago, it would be much larger than it is now. But reality has set in so i'll be happy if I can do these...
Tuscany shawl -- most important!
Dishcloths -- about 12 (3 done)
Fingerless gloves -- one pair (half done)
Felted clogs (started)
Wow--that was painful cuz I remembered all the things I wanted to do...but it's doubtful I'll have the time even for this.
Thanks for the contest...I've added you onto my list of blogs to keep track of!
Nobody wears the stuff I make them so I'm skipping out on Christmas knitting this year. Baked goods all around! At least people eat my cooies.
2 pairs of fuzzy feet- Dad & brother
Lap Blanket- Mom
Dress Socks- boyfriend
Shawl- Grandma
Ornaments- a few friends & relatives
Good luck with your holiday knitting!

This is going to be my 1st yr knitting gifts expressly for xmas. So its a small list and there's only one thing that I expect to be stressfull...its going to be my first human size sweater. thanks for the contest.
40% - 1 Lionbrand hoodie for my 2nd nephew
(I have doubts this will get done)
33% - 3 Pairs of Wrist warmers (me, bf & bff)
(finished 1pair yesterday in one sitting. Yeah ME!)
0% - 2 Hats (for me & bf)
(I can’t remember the name of the pattern but it look just like your Shedir pattern only in a hat. I’ve seen the pattern so many times when just browsing; now when I want it I can't find it. Of course I don’t know what to make for BF…I’ll just do a regular old 2x2 rib if I can't find something more creative.)
15% - 3 Scarves (2 for me and one for bf )
Knitting list. Let's see.
Ribbed Hat - 30% done.
Fingerless gloves - not started
2 Ipod holder - not started.
bag - not started
golf club covers - not started
I don't know if it's all going to get done!! I'm hoping just to get the bag, gloves, Hat, and ipod holders done. :)
Um, so my list is rather small. I've got lots of other projects going on, including a baby and a move, so Christmas knitting is not a priority
1. chunky scarf
2. baby blankets for a friend's twins
3. sweater for the baby
I'm relieved to see that I am far from the first commenter to have to confess that I am doing NO Christmas knitting this year. I've decided to make this the season of selfishness.
(sorry if this double posts...)
I found this entry via Ravelry. It's almost scary to actually have it written down in one place. At least no one on the list needs to know how far away their gift is from completion.
1. Endpaper Mitts, for friend.
2. Sheldon the Turtle, for different friend.
3. Magnetic Katamari, another friend.
4. Kitty hat 1, another friend.
5. Kitty hat 2, roommate.
6. Skull scarf, Secret Santa giftee.
7. Rice stitch scarf, another friend.
8. Handspun yarn (not a knitting project, but hey, it's fiber), gift exchange partner.
I always want to make lots for Xmas gifts...but usually don't get it all accomplished lol !
This year, I'm going along making what sounds nice and not worrying about what is actually finished.
So....
12 hats for the northern kids/grandkids...10 done
12 scarves for the northerners again..7 done
6 afghans...not going to happen this year
I would like to make at least 1 stocking
a variety of ornaments...5 done
socks for my grandson..2 pairs done
Well, mine has one more project left. (a Baby Surprise Jacket for my new little niece.) My parents don't like hand knits (well they do but they NEVER wear them so I don't give them!) and my in laws are knitters and prefer that I hand spin up some yarn for them.
Posting your contest on my blog!
I'm almost done knitting a present for my 92 year old mother. My daughter is 19 and at BROWN!!! and doesn't wear any of the things I've knit her even though she picked the yarn and pattern except the warm hats and scarf. But she has several I knit for her and doesn't want any more, so I'm off the hook there.
Did you knit when you were at Brown?
My knitted Christmas list as of now and hoping it doesn't grow too much more.
- 4 girl's button band hats with matching mittens (for my little nieces - 90% done
- 2 little boys winter hats and matching mittens - 50%
- 1 flap eared hat for son - 100%
- 1 flap eared hat for mom - 0%
- 1 scarf for dad - 0%
- socks for husband - 80%
... and a ton of charity knitting - what gets done, gets done. Usually it is about 10 hats and 5 pairs of mittens.
I actually got a few projects done earlier this year (a scarf, a pair of socks and a neckwarmer), so I am not left with 2 wonderful wallabies and a noro scarf. Anything else is gravy. I paired down my list considerably after I realized that there were less days to Christmas than gifts to knit on my list. I am just a little bit crazy.
My plans are...
4 pair of socks - 1st sock of one pair started...ideas for the others one my mind.
1 hat - I have the yarn and the pattern ready.
Does anyone have enchanted needles that I could use, so they will knit themselves?
And I would like to finish the sweater I started 3 years ago for my son.
Here's my list. I'll start with the finished ones.
-kneesocks for best friend, Melissa
-sock/slippers for boyfriend, Graham
-diagonal scarf for stepmom
unfinished=
-slippers for mom 30%
-sweater for brother (might become a birthday present if I run out of time.)
-fuzzy feet for dad
-hat for boyfriend
-dog sweater for brother's girlfriend's dog
-baby hat for boyfriend's sister's new baby
-baby hat or booties or both for step-brother's new baby
-baby hat for cousin's new baby
I think that's everything.
